Captain’s Log #7: HECTIC

logs

This week has been really hectic. So many work to do and so little time to complete them. I get that I am suppose to manage my time and keep track of my homework, but oh my gah there’s so many modules. And the animatic for the project is due in a few days AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Anyways, I had to sort of solo the animatic a little bit so here are the panels I did for the animatic so far. Still got a few left but so far this is what I have done.

My brain is about to be ransacked from all these panels oof.

I seriously don’t even know what to write anymore for these blogs.

Well, guess I’m out for now. Bye.

p.s: THIS BETTA GET ME AN A AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER OMG

Captain’s Log #6: Time to Animat-ic

logs

Week 5, I wanna dieeeeeeeeee

It’s another week of work, how fun. I am getting more and more pessimistic as the weeks progresses, but it’s a normal part of the process, right?

Moving on from last week, I am tasked to work on the animatic and sound design. 3.5 pages of storyboards, a 1 minute animatic, all by myself. That’s killer, in my opinion. I am not a great artist and I am not a fast one either, so I was really worried as to how the animatic will look. But thank fully Natasha offered to do the second page so a bit of that burden is now off my shoulders. YEEET!

I haven’t done that much for the animatic but so this is what I have done:

It’s simple shading and I wasn’t sure how the boy would have looked just yet when I was working on the animatic, so thus there will be a bit of slightly different look to the actual animation.

The last two panels took the longest since the audience would be able to see the entirety of the room, so I had to make sure I got the details right.

It’s hard to get so much work done with so many classes but somehow I am managing. Am I doing good? That’s definitely debatable.

Well, back to doing even more work I guess…..Bye…Your Captain signing out…

Captain’s Log #5: Another Week, Another Pitch

logs

Week 4, oh boy. Is it only Week 4? It felt a lot longer. Let my suffering end.

But Week 4 has me and my team members rushing to finish deliverables. Well, I had an easier time since I was mainly working on the storyboards and the colour choices for the layout / set / environment. Initially, I wanted to work on the character sheet since Dana seems to be loaded with work, but somehow she didn’t want to give that responsibility up and assured that she could handle it. Thankfully she did, so I’m relieved. She was looking really stressed all the time not gonna lie.

Then we went to do the pitch, and we were the first team to go up.

I WAS NOT READY JUST YET I HAD JUST ENTERED THE CLASS, AND 5 MINUTES BEFORE THAT , I WAS ASLEEP IN THE CAR XDDDDD

But nonetheless, I had to ready my heart, tighten my invisible neck tie, and let my brain juices flow. And I pretty much improved most of the stuff I said during the pitch. Would I say I didn’t prepare for the pitch? Well, not exactly since the team were in Discord discussing what we should say during the pitch. But I wasn’t sure what I would need to say during my turn since my slides mainly consists of pictures and they are self-explanatory? I don’t know. But as usual, the lecturers had questions and I had to find answers in the span of 5 seconds.

It was noted that the first version of the storyboard didn’t have an establishing shot. And that the characters looked too generic in terms of art style. *cries* And also that we needed to speak up louder lol XD

So I made changes to the previous storyboard. Not much had to be changed, but I had to find a way to add an establishing shot (or a more obvious establishing shot, in this case).

I am going to start working on the animatic for the animation soon, but my god this week I was just rushing with so many work for other modules, I barely have time to draw. But soon….soon….I WILL DO IT. *proceeds to go on YouTube and watch vids for the next few hours*

This is your captain signing out. PEACE I WANNA GO CHILL NOW BYEEEE

Captain’s Log 3: Storyboarding and Layout

logs

Week 3 of Pre-Production, people. This is where stuff starts to happen. We have to actually do work.

As a person who does not enjoy intense work, I was starting to get worried. A lot of deliverables are required and mainly due in the following week, since we have to present our work and pitch it again to our lecturers (as if the first time wasn’t enough *screech* ). But it’s fine. I’ll be the bigger person here and forgive them for making us do work in a shorter time.

In a three-man group, we don’t have any choice but to wear multiple hats for the project. For now, I was tasked to work on storyboard. For around a week, I spent time thumb nailing the shots and then creating an actual storyboard for it. The thumbnails were relatively easy and I did them pretty quick. I already had a pretty clear vision of how the short film is going to look like on screen. Below are the storyboards I created for the project:

I wasn’t sure how the final look for the character was going to look like, since the character design has not be completed yet. Thus I just had to make do and draw a boy who looks like…a boy. Yes, it’s a boy. The hands at the first panel was definitely hard to draw since I am not very skilled at drawing hands. But the rest are not much of an issue so thankfully I managed to finish the storyboard in around 3 hours or so.

After completing the storyboard, I was a little lost on what to do, so I consulted my teammate on what I should do. I did ask to assist on other deliverables, so I am tasked with colouring the layout of the room that the short film will be taking place.

Despite being an artist, I am not proficient or knowledgeable in colour theory. To be honest my colour theory sucks. If anything, why am I still qualified to be an artist? I am seriously questioning myself right now. But this is a graded project so, you got to do what you got to do.

I based the colour of the room according to our visual inspirations for the film ; mainly Omori (a video game) and the 5 minute animated short film, Afternoon Class. The bright colours and visuals are very significant in those two so I tried my best to emulate that feel.

I showed it to the team, but they felt that the room looks a bit too bright for the animation. So after much discussion and consideration, we have decided to go with the colours shown below.

And not going to lie, I am pretty proud of this! For once, the layout is not that bad! I definitely wish I can work a bit more on my colour theory, but so far, it doesn’t look too weird or ridiculous looking!

So this is what I have done for the past week. Still have much to do for the next few days before the next meeting but can’t wait this project to be over already. I know. It’s only the third week.

This has been your Captain. Logging off!

Captain’s Log #3: Pre-Production GO!

logs

Week 2 is over! We pitched our story ideas for the meeting. Spider Ring, Dreams and 2359, and have decided to go with 2359 since it has overall the better idea and potential for project. It is a relief that our team has already solidified the gist of the story, so we don’t have to rummage our brain for more ideas anymore, thank lord.

What does this mean for us now? TIME TO START PRE-PRODUCTION PHASE 2! We already decided who’s going to work on what. Dana is going start polishing up the character designs, while i work on the storyboard. Natasha will then start modelling out the 3D assets, since she is skilled in that area. I also polished up and edited the script a little, so the story flows better and also adding a bit more subtext to the story, not only for the viewer’s understanding, but for us as well.

There isn’t much to update on the project, but oh man, there is a lot to work on. Not counting this project, i also have other modules to work on and why are they so hard XDDD

Well that’s it for me! More studio-based posts will be uploaded on https://1080studios.tumblr.com/ where our studio posts updates weekly. It is much more professional than what i am doing right now, so hahahahaha. Alright, this was Captain Joobie speaking, im out.

CAPTAIN’S LOG #2: PRE-PITCHER’S MEETING

logs

Captain’s log number 2. A few days before the scheduled ‘elevator pitch meeting’.

My team so far have just been finishing up the last of our ideas and writing for the deliverables. We got the slides down already and we are currently polishing up on the words and making everything look more neat and professional. Dana also completed the logo of our team and it looks really really cool.

Simple and minimalistic and much professional.

I’m not sure when the animation of the logo is required but once the slides are done, I should probably start working on it.

I was tasked with working on the deliverables on one of our story ideas. In my opinion, the story sounds very confusing and a bit plot-holey (not an actual word), but at this point I’m just doing it for the sake of doing it. I much prefer the story of the boy finishing up his late assignment as it is the most cohesive and interesting one out of all them. But you gotta do what you gotta do, and I’m going to finish it.

I have finished the rough designs for the characters and the set as seen below:

Just really rough sketches to give an idea of what the characters and locations will look like.

I’m just hoping we can get through with the pitch and start working on the actual project. Wait, no, actually no. I forgot we have other modules too. sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Life is hard.

CAPTAIN’S LOG #1: THE START OF 1080 STUDIOS

logs

New year, new semester. And that also means…FINAL YEAR PROJECT! WOW MUCH FUN IM HAVING A GREAT TIME NO NOT REALLY I WANNA QUIT ALR.

As much as I appreciate animation, let’s just say I am not the best at it. So not going to lie I am worried not only for myself, but my team. However I think the strength of our team is that we are hardworking and determined (apart from me probably). Today is the first day where we came together and discussed the project, and we already crafted three stories for our project. That’s the first step to success, right?

Our team name is 1080 Studios. Not sure if we are going to stylise it to ’10:80 Studios’ but either ways, it sounds really cool. And very professional too. Makes me feel a bit fancy, if you ask me *wiggles non-existent moustache*. Dana is in charge of creating the logo and I plan to make an animated version of it. Once again, not going to lie, I am feeling a bit worried but nonetheless, I’ll give it my best shot.

However, the fact that we have already nailed down the three stories and even wrote 2/3 scripts for it, and also finalised our group name all on the same day is pretty amazing to me. Either that or I have extremely low standards for myself.

Alright, first day is where we start the work. Going to update a bit more next week or something. Maybe when we finish the logo I might update the blog. But for now, this is Captain Joobie speaking. I’m going to head out. Enjoy the flight and don’t hit your head on the way out. Good night.

S-L Project

Uncategorized

For this semester’s FCP project, our class had to work with a client from the industry and create a storyboard for an educational animation for students in the Philippines. The story we worked on is named, “Chad, the Honest Kid”. It is quite an experience for me personally since I never worked on an actual legitimate storyboard for a real company.

I helped to work on some character designs and also the storyboard for the animation. One of my team mates and I changed the storyboard to fit the new designs and to the client’s liking, and then she brushed up on the remaining flaws in our storyboard and made in more presentable. It was a little bit hard to communicate with some of our team members due to the COVID-19 situation and they may not check their phones to see new messages, but overall everyone delivered and I was glad.

After this project, I feel that I have learnt a bit more on how the animation industry works and the kind of standard they expect animators or artists to have. In addition, cooperation and communication are an essential part in working on animations. Fortunately, our generation lives in a world where technology is everywhere and allows interactions and conversations to be done from anywhere. And I am definitely grateful for that fact as without it, I don’t think we would be able to finish this project. Moreover, I also learnt a bit more about the education and lifestyle of children in Philippines. Through this project, I have a little a bit of insight about what life is like over there.

I definitely feel grateful for this opportunity to work with an actual company so we can assist in producing an animation that will be presented to many people. It is very exciting. In the future I would refer back to this project for learning and a guide for approaching projects.

For the second assignment, we had to attend two webinars by industry professionals to learn more about the animation industry and the kind of expectations we should have. I attended Nico Colaleo’s webinars / zoom meetings about animation and cartoon storyboardings.

The reason I chose these two webinars is because it is related to the animation industry, which is what I am currently learning right now. They both provide very good advice from industry professionals who have worked on many animation production first-hand, either on storyboarding, character designing, interviewing new animators etc.

The webinar was really relaxing and it just felt like listening to a podcast and provided the information I need if I ever work in the storyboarding / character designing department, since I am personally interested in character designing. Storyboarding also piques my interest as well since I am able to draw rough sketches rather than drawing full-blown proportionate art such as environment designs. The advices given were super useful and will definitely be in my head whenever I work a storyboard in the future.

From the first webinar, I was able to get a much better understanding of the workflow and the process many animators have to go through everyday, or when they start out. Now I know what I should prepare before I apply for a job and the kind of precautions I should take before an interview. It definitely helps me in my future jobs. And that I should start on building my portfolio.

Overall, I really enjoyed the webinars I attended. Even though the stuff that I have not learn is limitless, I am glad I was able to peek into their world and step into their shoes for a moment. There is a lot of discipline and patience put behind the works of these artists and the amount of effort put into their work will never be known by the public. It
